Hey All: Just a quick note to let you know that the folks at Stanford, have scrambled the best they can and have just confirmed my rescheduled date will be tomorrow at 5AM!
...Just a note to let everyone know that my Team at Stanford have been FANTASTIC! The event yesterday was totally out of their control, but they worked hard on my behalf to get me back into surgery as quickly as possible. So, To Dr Mitchell and All his Staff, A Great BIG Thank You!
Okay, so let's do this one more time. I look forward to touching base with all of you during my Recovery. Thanks for the great energy coming my way. It means more than I can say, brent
...overwhelmed with gratitude…
Hello All, as I opened my email this morning, I simply became overwhelmed by a wave of emotion... to see the sheer number of "best wishes" messages pop up on the screen has blown me over...I am such a lucky person to have each and every one of you in my life.
I wanted to let you know that your messages are getting through as you place comments on the website...I also need to tell you how how simply overwhelmed I am to have so many wonderful people in my life...I'm truly out of words...
I'll keep you updated on the tentitvive schedule for tomorrow. Thank you ALL so much, brent
Strange Turn of Events

Hi All, "Brent Here"...("what, isn't he supposed to be in the ER just now?"...) Well, in the world of Heart Transplants, Stanford Hospital is on the cutting edge. Unfortunately, when that organ becomes available, all other surgery activity stops...at least Brent's Surgery did today! My surgery has been postponed due to the specifically required operating room being unavailable due to the Heart Transplant. Of course trying to reschedule a procedure like mine is no easy task either, so now I'm going home, only to return Tomorrow Night in preparation for a "tentative" First-Case start Friday Morning, 2/26. If Friday does not pan-out, I get pushed to Tuesday AM. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement, as I'm really ready for this thing today. However, one learns to roll with the swell, and I will just need to be ready again on another day.
I'll post another update when I have more details.
A BIG THANK YOU to all of you who are sending me such good wishes today! I need to ask you All to put "a hold" on them until Friday or Tuesday! Thank you ALL so much, brent
Slight delay,,,but still on track
We 're here and ready, but the operating room isn't ready for us. There is an emergency heart transplant taking place right now, so Brent is on standby for a couple of hours. We are happy for the recipient, but it makes for a anxious, long morning of waiting. Thanks again for checking on Brent, and I will update again as soon as I have some more information. donna
Brent’s All Checked In!

Hi All, just a short note to let you know, that I am all ready to Rock! All systems GO, and I really appreciate all the kind phone-calls and good energy you are sending my way. My Sister, Donna and Dad, Don are both here by my side and My Mom, Jo is sending her good vibes from the East Coast. Donna will be updating this site as she finds time. Thank you for all your support, brent
An Exercise in Longevity…

I have some news that's really not kayak related. Well, actually, maybe it is, as it's been the key ingredient in why I have not taken a starting line in over a year. As I watch the Winter Olympics, (which as I LOVE!), I'm counting down the few days until a key event in my life. On 2/24/10, I will be going into Stanford Hospital to have open-heart surgery. I will have an operation to deal with an Aorta that's simply not behaving. I am very confident in the ability of my surgeon Dr Scott Mitchell, who's goal, by his own unsolicited words, were "Brent I want to get you back On The Water as soon as I can"...that's the guy I want doing my work! I really believe he's going to succeed.
By now, many of my friends have found out about the surgery and have been sending me all kinds of good-wishes. I can't thank you ALL enough, nor can I express how great you make me feel. Good Vibes are Healing Vibes, and I'll not be bashful about taking as many as I can get! Thanks again.
I hope to keep this website updated with my progress. We'll see how that goes. Of course the recovery will be a long one. My Cardiologist, Dr David Liang has told me to plan on 3-Months, but both he and I hope it to be sooner. I'm hoping to be back to some level of normal-life in Two!
Consequently, and with great regret, I've had to cancel my Canoecopia and Rutabaga teaching stints in Wisconsin this summer. However sometime after Mid June - or First of July, I'm expecting to be ready, (and Chomping At the Bit), to get out there teaching again! Stay in touch if you'd like to get into a class Mid-Summer, as I'm definitely going to be ready to go!
Okay, that's it for now. Thanks again for all the great energy, brent
All the best!
